Perfect Wines to Pair with Hairy Crab Dishes

With the hairy crab season fast approaching, sommelier Jeffrey Leung from etc wine shops suggests this year’s perfect wines to complement hairy crab dishes.

It is traditionally believed that hairy crab has a ’cooling’ effect on the body and is usually followed by a cup of ginger tea to warm the body up. Sommelier Jeffrey Leung suggests a selection that go along your favorite steamed hairy crab dish.

Steaming remains the most traditional method of enjoying a hairy crab. This dish has certain richness to it and you may pair this with the following:

Fleury Champagne Robert Fleury Brut 2002 (HK$515, champagne etc) which has a lemony and flowery taste with a hint of hazelnut; the Dom Pérignon 2002 (HK$1,550, champagne etc) has an opulent and floral flavour -- a great match for the dish.

White wine

Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc S de Suduiraut 2009 (HK$335, bordeaux etc) from Bordeaux has a crisp acidity and white peach finish to complement the smooth taste of the crab whilst the Henri Boillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Embrazes 2011 (HK$759, burgundy etc), a Chardonnay from Burgundy, has a hint of honeysuckle and sweetness. The Verget Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes 2009 (HK$1,190, burgundy etc) has a mineral finish with a hint of fresh lime and honeydew lemon, with the sweetness of this balancing out the crab roe taste.

Red wine

Arnoux-Lachaux Bourgogne Pinot Fin Rouge 2011 (HK$349, burgundy etc) is from 60+ year old vines based on the original Pinot fin strain.
